Photo Print Size Calculator

How big can this photo print? Pixels and DPI in, print size out — plus the megapixels, and what dropping to 150 DPI does to size and sharpness.

Example — 6000 × 4000 px at 300 DPI20 × 13.3 inches (50.8 × 33.9 cm) — 24 megapixels

How we got it — the example, step by step

  1. Print size = pixels ÷ DPI. Width: 6,000 ÷ 300 = 20 in. Height: 4,000 ÷ 300 = 13.33 in.
  2. The file itself: 6,000 × 4,000 = 24,000,000 pixels = 24 megapixels.

Check it backwards

20 in × 300 DPI = 6,000 pixels — the width we started with.

Questions people also ask

Is 300 DPI a law?
It is the standard rule of thumb for prints viewed at arm's length. A billboard is viewed from metres away and prints fine at 30 DPI effective — what matters is pixels per degree of vision, and DPI at the actual viewing distance is the honest way to state it.
