Fraction & Percent Calculator

Add, subtract, multiply or divide two fractions — or work a percentage. Steps include the common denominator and the cancelling, shown with the Euclidean algorithm.

Example — 1/2 + 1/35/6

How we got it — the example, step by step

  1. Find a common denominator: 2 and 3 both divide 6.
  2. Rewrite: 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6.
  3. Add the tops: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. Five and 6 share no factor, so it is already simplest.

Check it backwards

As decimals: 1/2 + 1/3 ≈ 0.5 + 0.3333 = 0.8333, and 5/6 ≈ 0.8333. Same.

Questions people also ask

How does it simplify fractions?
By the greatest common divisor, found with the Euclidean algorithm — and the algorithm's divisions are printed in the steps, so you can follow or copy the method.

What percentage questions can it do?
Three kinds: what is p% of a number, one number as a percentage of another, and percentage change between two numbers.
