Dilution Calculator

C1V1 = C2V2. Fill in any three of concentration and volume, leave one empty, and get the fourth.

Example — Dilute 2 M stock to 0.5 M, making 100 mlV1 = 25 (ml of stock)

Leave exactly one box empty — that is the one to solve for.

How we got it — the example, step by step

  1. Dilution keeps the amount of solute the same, so C1 × V1 = C2 × V2.
  2. Solve for V1: V1 = C2 × V2 ÷ C1 = 0.5 × 100 ÷ 2 = 25.

Check it backwards

C1 × V1 = 2 × 25 = 50, and C2 × V2 = 0.5 × 100 = 50 — equal, as the equation requires. So: measure 25 ml of stock and add solvent up to 100 ml.

Do the units matter?
Only that they match: both concentrations in the same unit (both mol/L, say) and both volumes in the same unit (both ml). The answer comes out in the volume unit you used.
