Calorie Calculator

Daily calorie needs from the Mifflin–St Jeor formula — named, shown in numbers, and labelled an estimate, because it is one.

Example — Man, 70 kg, 175 cm, 30 years old, sedentaryAbout 1,979 kcal/day to maintain weight

How we got it — the example, step by step

  1. Resting burn (BMR) by Mifflin–St Jeor: 10 × 70 + 6.25 × 175 − 5 × 30 + 5 = 1,648.75 kcal/day.
  2. Sedentary activity multiplies by 1.2: 1,648.75 × 1.2 ≈ 1,979 kcal/day.

Check it backwards

Every activity level in the table is the same BMR multiplied by its factor, so the levels check against each other.

Where does the formula come from?
Mifflin et al., published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1990. It is the most widely used BMR estimate in dietetics — and it is still an estimate: real needs vary with muscle mass, health and how honestly the activity level is picked.
