BMI Calculator

Weight and height in, BMI out, with the standard range it falls in. Metric or imperial.

Example — 70 kg, 175 cmBMI = 22.86 — Healthy range (18.5 to 24.9)

How we got it — the example, step by step

  1. BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)².
  2. Height: 175 cm = 1.75 m. Squared: 3.0625.
  3. 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.86.

Check it backwards

22.86 × 3.0625 = 70.0 kg — back to the weight we started with.

Questions people also ask

What are the standard BMI ranges?
Underweight below 18.5; healthy range 18.5–24.9; overweight 25–29.9; obese range 30 and above. These are the WHO adult categories.

What does BMI not see?
Muscle, bone density and where fat sits. A muscular athlete can land in the 'overweight' range with very little fat. BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis.
